The telc B2 Writing section is where the leap to B1 is most clearly felt. Instead of a simple personal letter, the telc B2 Writing task requires a semi-formal email of at least 150 words, featuring structures typical of B2 such as the subjunctive II, the passive voice, and nuanced connectors. This page uses two fully annotated emails (a complaint and an inquiry) as examples to show you how to achieve the maximum 45 points on the telc B2 Writing section.
Distribution of the 45 Points on the telc B2 Writing Exam
Four evaluation criteria – each one is highlighted in color in the sample emails below
Have all four key points given in the task been covered appropriately? Missing a point entirely will result in a significant loss of points. The minimum word count of 150 words must also be met.
A logical structure with a salutation, introduction, main body (ideally one paragraph per main point), and closing. Conjunctions such as ”außerdem,” ”darüber hinaus,” and ”dennoch” link the ideas together.
Structures typical of the B2 level must be used correctly: the subjunctive II for polite requests, the passive for factual statements, and subordinate clauses with “weil,” “obwohl,” and “damit.” Minor mistakes are acceptable as long as they do not hinder comprehension.
Diverse vocabulary and consistently formal language (use of the formal “Sie” form and elevated expressions). Writers at the B1 level are missing out on points - repetition and simple verbs are the biggest risks.

Warum: B2 verlangt formelles Register.
Punktabzug.
Warum: Wortvariation ist Teil der „Ausdrucksfähigkeit". Drei verschiedene Wörter statt dreimal „schlecht" = mehr Punkte.

FAQ About the telc B2 Writing Exam
How long should a telc B2 email be?
At least 150 words, ideally 170 to 200 words. If you write significantly fewer than 150 words, you risk losing points on the “Accomplishing Task” section because the task will be considered incomplete. If you write significantly more than 200 words, you’ll lose valuable time that could be spent on the other parts of the exam.
What is the difference between a complaint and an inquiry on the telc B2 exam?
In the exam, you always have the choice between two types of tasks: a complaint (e.g., about a hotel, a trip, or an order) or a request for information (e.g., about a language course, a travel package, or an apartment). You choose one of the two tasks and write only that one email. Both are graded according to the same four criteria.
How many points will I receive for the B2 writing section?
A maximum of 45 points. These are distributed across four evaluation criteria: task completion, text structure and coherence, linguistic accuracy, and expressiveness. You don’t need to know the exact score for each criterion, but in the worst-case scenario (e.g., if you completely omit a key point), the entire email could be awarded very few points.
How much time do I have to write the telc B2 email?
30 minutes. A proven breakdown: 5 minutes to choose the prompt and jot down keywords for the 4 key points, 20 minutes for writing, and 5 minutes for a quick review (grammar, subjunctive, connectors).
What topics frequently appear in the telc B2 complaint?
Complaints often concern hotels, travel, orders, language courses, gyms, or swimming pools. The assignment usually consists of a brief description of the situation along with four key points. You don’t need to have personal experience – the email is always fictional.
What topics frequently appear in the telc B2 inquiry?
apartments, rental cars, adult education classes, or wellness packages are common. You’ll be shown a fictional ad and asked to request more information – usually regarding price, content, terms and conditions, and additional services.
What are the most common mistakes in B2 writing?
Too informal a tone (instead of the formal “Sie”), lack of the subjunctive II in requests, short and unconnected sentences without conjunctions, missing key points, and word repetition instead of linguistic variation. On this page, you’ll find all six errors explained in detail, each with an example.
Can I test the AI correction on a B2-level assignment?
Currently, the AI correction is designed for the B1 task (personal letter). The B2 version, which involves a semi-formal email, is in the works. However, the same four evaluation criteria apply to B2 as well – so you can see in the B1 test exactly how the system evaluates task completion, text structure, linguistic accuracy, and expressiveness.
